Is STERILUX safe?
Yes, Sterilux is designed with safety in mind.
It uses UVA-based (regular visible light) photoredox catalysis technology—a light-driven, chemical-free process that generates reactive species only at the catalyst surface. Unlike UVC systems, Sterilux does not emit harmful ultraviolet radiation into the surrounding space, making it safe for continuous use in occupied environments like offices, schools, and homes.
Sterilux contains no ozone, no toxic chemicals, and produces no harmful byproducts under normal operation. All components meet applicable electrical and safety standards, and the system is engineered to operate within safe exposure levels for humans and pets.
What is Photoredox Catalytic sterilization and how does it work?
Photo Catalytic sterilization is a light-activated process that neutralizes bacteria, viruses, and other harmful microbes. The technology was discovered in 1972 and Sterilux uses this as it’s foundational technology.
It works by shining UVA (regular visible light) onto a special surface called a photocatalyst. When exposed to light, this surface generates reactive oxygen species (ROS) such as hydroxyl radicals and superoxide ions.
These ROS break down the outer membranes of microbes and disrupt their DNA or RNA, rendering them inactive or destroying them entirely—without the use of chemicals or direct UVC exposure to people. The result is a safe, continuous form of sterilization that works in the background to improve air and surface hygiene.
How is Sterilux different from regular LED bulbs?
Sterilux goes beyond lighting — it disinfects.

How do I install lights with Sterilux?

Sterilux-enabled lighting installs just like any other lighting fixture/bulb — no special hardware, no custom wiring, no additional labor. The only performance requirement is light level: ensure that target surfaces receive at least 39 foot-candles to activate the full sanitization efficacy.
Light Intensity
Disinfection requires sufficient light (i.e., photon energy) to be activated. Below optimal levels (e.g., 39 foot-candles / ~420 lux), performance decreases significantly, as fewer reactive oxygen species (ROS) are generated.
Exposure Time
Disinfection is a function of both light intensity and duration. Short exposure times—due to rapid airflow or limited surface contact—can reduce overall effectiveness unless compensated by higher intensity.
Environmental Conditions
Factors like humidity and temperature affect radical generation. For example, dry air may limit hydroxyl radical production, while extremely hot temperatures can affect catalyst stability or reaction efficiency.
